In the past 5 years, I haven't been really active in attending gigs or concerts due to the crude relationship rules my ex-boyfriend has implemented in our relationship.
After breaking up with him this year, I made a vow to attend and expose myself to the so-called "punk rock" scene again by going to gigs as much as I can allow myself to.
Last November 19, 2016, Threadfest 2016 was held in Metro Manila. Previously, I think it was held in Cebu. When I heard they were holding it within the confines of MNL at B-Side Collective, Makati- I was ecstatic! Not only do I get to see all the local merch in one location but I also get to rock out with the local OPM talents.
They had two types of tickets: Php500 and Php250. The Php500 comes with a free t-shirt and lanyard while the latter only comes with a free lanyard. L and I got the Php250 ones because who am I kidding? I bet the shirt sizes are tiny and I'm a big girl with a big boy. (Ok, that sentence was a bit off. Haha!)
Here's the lineup for that night:
A few hours before the event, I came from a seminar Ms. Malu and I held in Picasso. I know. I'm a busy woman with only a few hours for rocking out but I manage to fit it into my hectic schedule.
I had 8 Cuts for lunch (as suggested by Ms. Malu) and it was my second time to eat something from that burger joint. I ordered the "Piggy" which was a quarter pounder topped with strips of bacon, mozzarella, "bacon jam", lollo rosso (some fancy lettuce), tomatoes and garlic. When I had my first bite, its grease just squirted into my hands. Oh man, was that burger juicy! I sent L a photo of this beastly feast. He was so jealous of my lunch and begged me to have 8 Cuts for dinner.
After the seminar, I went to Greenbelt to meet up with L for a pre-gig meal. Of course, I gave into his wishes. We went back to 8 Cuts, ordered "Piggy" and a serving of their onion rings.

The wonderful pre-gig meal of my dearest L.
I forgot to mention how tasty those onion rings were. The batter is really thick and crunchy, definitely not Burger King material. It is like shrimp tempura batter with a kick of bbq flavoring. It drove us nuts.
After having dinner, we headed out to B-Side Collective at around 7PM. I aim to skip the front acts because just like any punk rocker, we all know the best bands tend to perform last. Just like the old saying "save the best for last." :)
When we arrived at the venue, it was a total scene. Kids decked in black were drinking and smoking their lungs out. 90% of the population wore the signature black Vans (I am guilty of being part of that population) and black band shirts. L and I smoked first before going into the venue where the event was taking place. Bloody hell! The ground was slippery wet. I guess it rained hard.
There were a lot of booths to choose from. They are all 100% local and independent. Most of the shirt brands can't be found in malls, well except for Nick Automatic. I'm pretty sure they have a store in SM North Edsa.
We proceeded to Evil Genius clothing with Lauren pointing out this green shirt he really liked, but because of our "big person problems," they didn't have it in our size. Oh, how disappointing. We ended up buying DGRAVE clothing which isn't that bad because Josh Alipe and Addy Abad promote their brand. Ok, achievement unlocked. So we have couple shirts now? It is not really our thing but to commemorate the night, L didn't want to be a killjoy since he's such a genuinely sweet guy, we went on and bought couple shirts for ourselves. Haha.
After getting our little "remembrance", we joined the crowd to watch the bands. There were breaks in between the performances wherein the hosts gave out prizes to random members of the audience. I remember this one really drunk guy, he was asked to name one of the major sponsors of the event and he shouted with gusto: "CHICOSCI!" Haha. Man, that was really funny as hell.
For
some reason, they weren't able to follow the line-up that was
originally posted. Together with the boisterous and energetic crowd, we
kept guessing which band would be playing next. It was a pretty intense
mosh moment for me then! When Typecast went onstage to play, this woman
(or teenager, I'm not entirely sure what her age was) next to me started
twirling, jumping and moshing. What can you do right?
She
got the crowd started, so we joined in and kept the energy alive by
jumping up and down with her. I was actually rejoicing when they played
two of my favorite songs, "Reverend's Daughter" and "Another Minute
Until Ten". I felt nostalgia in my lungs, its as if it was 2004 again.
That was when I first heard of Typecast at my cousin's place. He was
placing songs in my new MP3 equipped with 512 MB (yash, so powerful naman!) of memory.
I
was also astounded by Chicosci's performance. They really brought down
the house! Miggy Chavez was able to direct everyone (yes, L and I joined
in!) to squat on the wet floor before he started belting out one of his
iconic songs. He is still a crowd favorite, I mean, weren't you a part
of the Vampire Social Club ages ago? Because I sure as hell was a proud
member!
Also,
L pushed me towards Miggy Chavez while he was singing to us. True love
is when your partner pushes you towards your ultimate high school emo
crush, who used to sport emo hair and dark eyeliner. š
I also want to mention how cute Mong Alcaraz was while they were doing soundcheck.
He was playing random WWE tunes accompanied by his guitar. Your charm never fades, Mong!
My legs felt like jelly towards the end of the show, we weren't able to watch Faspitch though because I felt really thirsty and my legs felt wobbly. L was cool with it, he says we can always watch them again next time.
As a first timer in Threadfest, it was all worth it! I like how the venue was small enough to keep the audience engaged but still big enough for them to let loose and have fun. If ever they hold Threadfest 2017 in Manila, L and I will attend it again! š¤š»
